Roommate Contract

The purpose of this agreement is to improve both communication between roommates and the chances of a successful roommate relationship.  Getting along with people who are different from you is a valuable skill and an important part of the college experience. If you take adequate time to discuss each item thoroughly and agree upon guidelines which are acceptable to all, you will go a long way in avoiding conflicts in the future.

Organization/ Cleaning Habits:

1.  How will the room be arranged?

2.  What level of clutter is tolerable to both of us?

3.  Regarding the cleaning of specific common areas (such as the bathroom, the trash, etc.), who will clean what and how often?

4.  General cleaning / picking up will be done daily, weekly, or as needed?

Use of Personal Property:

(some of the items to consider include: TV, toiletries, hairdryers, curling irons, stereo equipment, computer, CDs/ DVDs, food, school & office supplies, clothes, and books)

1.  What items can be shared without asking?

2.  What items should each ask about before borrowing?

3.  What items are only for personal use?

4.  When one of us is gone (such as for the weekend), what items may visitors of the other use or not use?  (bed, TV, stereo, etc.)

Communication:

1. How will we communicate when something is bothering one of us?

2.  How will phone messages be handled?

3.  How late is ok to receive phone calls?

Guests:

1. What hours are ok for same-sex visitors?

2.  What hours are ok for visitors of the opposite sex?

3.  What length of time is ok for guest visits? And how often?

4.  How much advance warning do we want when visitors are coming?

5.  How will we handle it if one of us has guests and the other needs to study?

Sleeping habits:

1.  What time do we want to have lights out on weekdays? On weekends?

2.  What activities are ok when the other is trying to sleep? (such as reading, studying, watching TV, computer work, talking on the phone)

Study Times:

1.  What times will be designated as quiet times for studying?

2.  What activities are okay when the other is studying? (such as reading, studying, watching TV, computer work, talking on the phone)

Miscellaneous Issues / Preferences:

1.  Are there things which either of us are allergic to? (ie: dust, foods, pollen, smoke)

2.  At what temperature will we keep the room(s)?

3.  What other issues are important to us or will be helpful in our getting along:

We, as roommates, enter into this agreement in good faith.  We fully intend to abide by all policies that we have made.  We agree to be flexible and to revise this agreement as it becomes necessary.
